First week at new job

My first week at AppAssure is over, and thus far it’s been as enjoyable as I expected.

I generally roll in around 9:30 or 10:00, and leave between 6:00 and 8:00, then usually work from home into the night. In one week I’ve implemented an automated build with CC.NET, written some C++/CLI, some C#, and debugged an insidious stack corruption problem. The diversity of the work environment is very enriching, as is the laid-back atmosphere, the deeply technical focus, and the coherent mission.

Gone is the morning aversion to going to work (gone, too, is the business casual wardrobe; I’ll save at least $20/yr under my new employers ‘you can wear jeans w/o paying’ policy.) Gone is the shitty morning commute, the parking ritual, the oh-so-big-corporation elevator ride, the throngs of people milling about without any visible contribution.

I can talk about stack corruption or heap contention and my co-workers not only understand but can respond intelligently in kind. I haven’t seen or been shat upon by a single government bureaucrat yet, with no indication of any on the horizon. Though the coffee is nowhere near as convenient as the BE Flavia machines, I can always walk the 30 feet to the pub downstairs for some Irish coffee.

Overall, I’m having a great time, and I’ve no doubt I made the right call.
